The client brief called for a contemporary interpretation of the classical colonial tropical residence. The white, calmly symmetrical facade presents an expansive covered entry projecting from the gabled open foyer, flanked by arched colonnades articulated with louvres. 125 rooms of one, two and three bedrooms comprise the resort, with the majority of two beds designed as twin keys with a one bed unit and motel suite.
The lobby is a generously vaulted space of white painted timber ceilings and polished white stone floors, with striking mahogany-stained ‘punkahs’ swaying in tandem above. Bamboo battens painted black form the reception desk, providing contrast to the abundant white. Other organic elements include rough sawn timber of the benchtop and the extensive meandering pool and garden beyond that come into sight from reception via a circular balcony. The multi-level pool of terraced waterfalls envelopes the building, featuring submerged archways, a stone bridge, grotto and swim-up bar.
Each unit includes a spa and triple sliding doors to private verandahs overlooking the pool. Locally crafted sculptural sconce lights set in niches along the hallways add some whimsy, as does the mosaic feature waterfall near reception. Where corridors intercept, courts capture glimpses of sky and trees spanning three levels. Poolside lanterns illuminate The PortSea from dusk, adding drama and one of many touches which highlight the happy co-existence of restrained elegance with hints of wild tropical divergences.
