TPG Architects were commissioned by the owners of the Barrier Reef Medical Practice to design a new medical facility within the character precinct of North Cairns.
The state-of-the-art facility provides a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere for eight doctors and their nursing and administration staff, along with the patients.
TPG Architects designed the new facility utilising the existing 1930s Queenslander that was occupying the site. The design raised the existing building and converted the existing residence into a care taker’s facility.
The refurbishment included a deck extension, new kitchen and new entry separate to the medical facility. The new medical facility was then inserted under the raised residence and designed in keeping with the Queenslander vernacular. The consultation rooms are positioned to the exterior to maximise natural light. A central treatment room allows easy circulation and access for each doctor.
The new medical facility offers eight consultation rooms, a nursing station and preparation room, an audio-iridology consultation room, business manager’s office, front reception and patient waiting area, 4 bed treatment room, 2 bed emergency room, sterilization room, staff training room, ambulance bay and both patient and staff amenities plus a children’s play area. It includes generous timber verandahs, batten screening and coffered ceilings to separate zones.
